Houston Celebrates Unwavering Spirit of Volunteerism at Mayor's Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony

On April 24, 2024, Houston’s City Hall was the focal point of community and service as the Mayor's Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony unfolded, bringing together civic leaders and dedicated citizens to celebrate the indomitable spirit of volunteerism in Houston. This annual event, hosted by the Department of Neighborhoods (DON) in collaboration with Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston (IMGH), featured heartfelt commendations and acknowledgments from some of the city's top officials.

Mayor John Whitmire, along with Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Amy Peck, delivered a powerful keynote address, highlighting the extraordinary efforts of Houston's volunteers. “It's a profound honor to recognize the exceptional individuals and community organizations collaborating with the City of Houston," Mayor Whitmire stated. "Their tireless efforts range from providing crucial legal services to mentoring our youth, significantly enhancing the quality of life in our communities."

The ceremony also included a special recognition segment where Mayor Whitmire and DON Director Herbert Sims presented awards to 22 outstanding volunteers. This year’s accolades included two inaugural awards in the Next Generation youth category and two Service Coordination Star awards, spotlighting exceptional volunteer management and coordination.

Andréa Shiloh, IMGH’s Vice President of Volunteerism & Civic Service, presented the 2024 Volunteer Houston Spotlight Awards to five exemplary individuals, celebrating their unwavering commitment and impactful service across Houston. "Volunteers are truly Houston’s heartbeat," Shiloh remarked. "Their dedication and selflessness embody the spirit of our community and inspire continued efforts toward making Houston a beacon of hope and camaraderie."


Martin B. Cominsky, President & CEO of Interfaith Ministries, emphasized the significance of the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which was bestowed on 17 volunteers, including a Lifetime Achievement Award winner. "These awards recognize the sustained and dedicated service of volunteers who go above and beyond to help their fellow Houstonians," said Cominsky.

This celebration not only highlighted the contributions of individuals but also reinforced the vital role that volunteerism plays in Houston’s social and cultural fabric. For over fifty years, Volunteer Houston has been pivotal in connecting volunteers with nonprofits and community projects, nurturing a culture of compassion that defines the city’s character.
