February officially became known as Black History Month because of Dr. Carter G. Woodson. He made sure the African American story was told with the establishment of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915. He also founded the Journal of Negro History and launched Negro History Week in 1926. This was later known as Black History Month.

Warren Moon became the first Black quarterback to be inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame.
February 5, 1958
Clifton R. Wharton Sr. was confirmed as a minister to Rumania. A career diplomat, he was the first Black to head a U. S. embassy in Europe.

The Peabody Fund for Black education was established in the South.
February 7, 1926
Dr. Carter G. Woodson initiates National Negro Week.
February 8, 1986
Oprah Winfrey becomes the first African American woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show.
February 9, 1995
Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr. became the first African American astronaut to take a space walk.
February 10, 1964
After 10 days of debate and voting on 125 amendments, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by a vote of 290-130. The bill prohibited any state or local government or public facility from denying access to anyone because of race or ethnic origin. It further gave the U. S. Attorney General the power to bring school desegregation law suits.
