Bill Bellamy and James Tupper Chat With Wendy Williams
Bill Bellamy on visiting the late Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch:
BB: I interviewed Michael Jackson in 1997 for the “History” history album; he’s the biggest star in history, but I actually got invited to the Neverland Ranch, wow was he ballin’. … For me, growing up in North New Jersey, to go to a house with like five thousand acres [of land], I’m like ‘wow.’ He had his own zoo-when you got your own zoo in your yard, I’m like ‘you’re ballin.’ And he had like every kind of animal, I mean, how many brothers you know have their own bear? He’s got a bear, we (DEL) just barely have a dog.
Bill Bellamy on his first comedic performance at The Apollo Theater:
WW: You have a very tough business. The comedic circle is really small; here in New York we have the Apollo Theater, very rough crowd …
BB: When I first started, you had to perform at The Apollo. You wanted to get through it, you wanted to perform, you wanted to get a standing [ovation] … and the thing that is scary about The Apollo is that it is a New York crowd, they are not playing. You can’t come out there with gimmicky stuff. So, I’m going to give you twelve seconds to get it in, if you don’t get it in, it feels like a whole bunch of pit bulls are coming over like a dark cloud. When I did it, I remember the real act got booed-somebody famous came down the stairs crying-and I was like ‘Oh, it’s going to be bad.’
