Crisis Intervention of Houston, Inc., (CIH), a non-profit agency that provides support for people in crisis, honored Ann Deaton, Audrey Lawson, Anne Mendelsohn, Alicia Smith and Ann Stern at the River Oaks Country Club at their annual gala, “The A-List.” Chaired by Sara Speer Selber and co-chair Heather Coleman Simpson, these five remarkable women were recognized for “answering the call” of service to the Houston community.
More than 250 guests gathered at the soiree to support the honorees, raising funds for Crisis Hotline and CIH’s other programs. The evening featured a colorful, lively video presentation which paid tribute to the honorees by highlighting the contributions each has made towards improving the Houston community.

The delighted honorees were also presented with an “A-List Day” mayoral proclamation by another remarkable “A,” Houston’s first lady Andrea White. Channel 13 news anchor Melanie Lawson led the evening’s program, serving as Master of Ceremonies, while her father Reverend William A. Lawson gave the evening’s invocation. Remarks were also made by Jodi Baird, manager of Public Affairs for Chevron, the evening’s title sponsor, and by Chairwoman Sara Speer Selber.
The evening’s adoring crowd of supporters also included Lois and George Stark, Kimberly and Frank DeLape, Jim and Molly Crownover, Ginger and Jack Blanton, Councilwoman Pam Holm, Deborah Duncan, Sue Payne, Cathy Lamboley, John Mendelsohn, Karl Stern, Kim and Dan Moody, Shelley and Billy Iglesias, Misty and Mushahid Khan, Lance Smith with sons Chandler and Cole, and many more.
A United Way agency, CIH programs include the Crisis Hotline, (713-HOTLINE), a free, anonymous phone service staffed with trained phone counselors that answer calls from people in crisis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Because it answers more than 265 crisis-related phone calls per day, and more than 96,000 phone calls per year, the organization uses its annual gala to recognize others who have “answered the call” of service to the community.
