uhlogoThe University of Houston Black Alumni Association (UHBAA) will host its Annual Scholarship Gala on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the JW Marriott Hotel at 5150 Westheimer Road. This year is significant as it marks the 20th Anniversary of the founding of the Black Alumni Association.

The momentous evening will honor an outstanding group of alumni and friends for their extraordinary professional, social and dedicated service to the University of Houston community.

The theme, “Planted. Strong. Enduring.” reflects that UHBAA was planted 20 years ago by Honorary Chair, Gene Locke and others; remains strong in numbers and has a rich history; and endures with the support of past honorees and friends and gifted alumni who strengthen UHBAA’s lasting vision.

The honorees are:  The Honorable Jacqueline Baly Chaumette, Sugar Land City Council; Dennis Kennedy, ED., Texas Diversity Council; Carla Lane, President, Diverse Staff a Lane Staffing Company; Derrick Mitchell, Partner, Bracewell & Giuliani LLP; The Honorable Calvin W. Stephens, Member, UH System Board of Regents; Kevin Sumlin, UH Football Head Coach; and James S. Walker, II, President, Walker Architects.

Over the past 20 years, UHBAA has awarded close to $28,000 in scholarships to deserving African-American students who exhibit good academic standing, leadership qualities and financial need at the University of Houston.

Reception entertainment will be provided by The Joe Carmouche Band.

Founded in 1988 with the mission to strengthen the relationship of alumni to the Houston community, the UHBAA continues to advance the interests and promote the welfare of the university and serve as a forum to address the various issues and concerns affecting black students, faculty and alumni, as well as the community as a whole.

Tables and tickets are still available.  Details on prices and more information are available online at www.myCougarConnection.com/BAA.
